Patrick Ikwueto is the principal partner at his law firm, IKWUETO®. He was enrolled as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria in the year 1985. He attained the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria in 2004 and was admitted as a Fellow of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in 2008. He attended The Hague Academy of International Law in 2004. After successfully completing the prescribed course at Kebble College, Oxford, he obtained Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration in September 2005. Mr Ikwueto successfully completed the Harvard Law School Executive Education on Negotiation and Dispute Resolution Fall 2022.
Mr. Ikwueto has acted as Sole Arbitrator, Chairman of Panel and Co-Arbitrator in several domestic arbitrations and has been appointed as Co-Arbitrator in an ICC Arbitration. He represents Parties as Counsel before Arbitral Panels and continues to provide expert advice to corporations, regulatory authorities and diplomatic institutions on a wide range of subjects. He has acted for individuals and corporations in civil and commercial disputes before Courts and Tribunals and has completed several high-profile litigations involving major Regulators, Investors and Contractors.
He provided advisory services and expert legal representation leading to the settlement of major dispute between a major Parastatal of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and International Oil Companies (IOCs) relating to Production Sharing Contract (PSC). He has acted for a Regional Investment and Development Bank in relation to complex contractual issues and legal matters. He is presently acting for an indigenous oil production and exploration company in relation to the renewal of the Oil Mining Lease (OML) over a high net-worth oil block and has been involved in major landmark constitutional and administrative disputes relating to major Executive and Legislative offices before various cadres of Nigerian Legal System (High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court).
In his over three decades of legal practice, he has also hosted workshops and seminars, such as: Interactive Seminar on Ethics and Professionalism at the Bar co-hosted with the NBA Abuja Branch (April 2006); Public and Private Partnership as a vehicle for sustainable development co-hosted with the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria under the auspices of Abuja Diplomatic Business Forum (June 2007); Settling Disputes in a Recession – Arbitration as a viable option (June 2009); Working discussions co-hosted with CIArb, Nigeria Branch; Arbitration as an Alternative Dispute Resolution Option for Business operators co-hosted with the Embassy of Switzerland in Nigeria under the auspices of Business Meets Politics Forum (March 2011) etc.
Mr. Ikwueto has also presented and written several professional papers including published and unpublished articles, such as: ‘Branding and Marketing in Legal Practice’, a presentation to LEX FORA, Abuja in April 2008; ‘Forensic Advocacy’ (Unpublished Article); ‘Cut the Fig Tree? Arbitration: A fruitless Alternative to Litigation’, a presentation at the Legal Awareness Programme hosted by the Abuja Multi-Door Court House in collaboration with the British Council Abuja; ‘Is Arbitration a viable Alternative to litigation – lessons learnt from other jurisdictions’ (Unpublished Article); ‘Recovery of Stolen Money: A window for Dormant Accounts’, a report submitted to the Embassy of Switzerland towards the Stolen Asset Recovery (STAR) Initiative etc.
